Pat’s Corner
As I have the opportunity of speaking to our patients weekly in our auditorium, I can’t begin to tell you the satisfaction it brings me when I look at them and assure them they’ve done nothing wrong! It’s a joy to honestly explain it’s not a shortage of willpower, character or conscience that caused their addictions. They smile with relief and it’s true! It’s also this fundamental belief that makes our Schick Shadel Hospital the most successful treatment facility in the world.
“Nowhere but here does a facility or program quickly, abruptly, and in most cases permanently, bring that all too common pattern of self destruction to a fast, happy halt.“
Yes, the difference is fundamental, and a tribute to the great Charles Shadel who saw the problem of addiction to intoxicants through different eyes. Shadel recognized it as an inherited disease of the brain, then developed the medical cure that has now been successfully administered to tens of thousands.
The vast majority of “rehab” facilities still operate with formulas and notions that could be likened to the “dark ages.” There, thousands struggle constantly, fighting back the overpowering urges to use alcohol and opiates, and for most it’s a loosing battle. Such programs use persuasion, and require the addicted to employ rigid mental disciplines in search of sobriety. Most fail with this approach to addressing the cravings and desires of addiction. The struggles of this powerful mental disorder are usually too great to overcome with such methods.
Shadel’s dignified and quick solution to the problem, which we administer, is really a two pronged approach. We eliminate the desire with aversion treatments, and cleanse the mind with our induced deep sleep therapy. Again this year, about a thousand patients will leave our hospital and can tell you how absolutely correct Charles Shadel was!
